Phonics
St Mary’s Catholic Primary School teaches phonics through the Letters and Sounds scheme.
Letters and Sounds is a phonics resources published by the Department for Education and Skills in 2007. It aims to build children’s speaking and listening skills as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing phonics knowledge and skills.
There are 6 overlapping phases:

Once children are ready for books to further develop their reading skills St Mary’s use Oxford Reading Tree Scheme. The first few books and stages introduce the main characters Biff, Chip and Kipper.
